Manage Weather Risk

Know what weather has happened, what is occurring now, and what is about to unfold.

Understanding weather risk factors in real-time is a key component to managing emergency responder and community risk. Weather perils include high winds, lightning, wildfires, hurricanes, lightning, heavy rain & flooding, heavy snowfall, icing and extreme heat and cold.

Forecast insights into weather risk factors allow for appropriate levels of preparedness while accurate insights into real-time weather conditions allow for incident management.

Pairing Tempest insights with National Weather Service watch and warning advisories, real-time radar and lightning data provides a complete weather risk picture that helps organizations and communities make faster, more informed decisions to protect lives, safeguard communities, and minimize property damage.

Customer Experiences

Grapevine FD, TX

Grapevine FD, serving 51,000 citizens, had 6 failing weather stations from a competitor, but after purchasing and testing out a Tempest station with cellular connectivity, they are replacing all of their stations with Tempests. They found the Tempest station to be reliable, accurate, and affordable.

Pocono Township, PA

This small local government EM organization has deployed a network of 5 TempestOne weather stations across their area so that they know exactly what conditions to expect when responding to emergencies. They are daily users of the Console where they can monitor weather conditions in real-time, alongside National Weather Service watches and warnings, and see incoming storms with radar and lightning overlays.

Clallam County EM, WA

Clallam County recently installed a TempestOne weather station and have been using the Console to monitor real-time weather conditions. When a severe thunderstorm came through, the station detected 66 lightning strikes over the event. “It was great information for us to manage what infrastructure needed to be checked, like our radio antennas in that zone. Go Tempest!”

Ashfield FD & EMS, MA

The EM Director has been a personal owner of the Tempest weather station for 5 years and has been impressed with how well it has performed and the simplicity of installing, operating and accessing history data. He has recommended Tempest to many others including his direct contact at the state emergency management agency (MEMA) as well as other directors (EMDs) in the area. After securing grant money to improve weather monitoring for the town, the EMD knew that Tempest could deliver exactly what he needed – a solution to better assist in monitoring weather conditions as well as being able to recall collected/historical data for internal use in emergency planning.

Charleston County EM, SC

Charleston County accesses the extensive network of Tempest weather stations deployed by the community for real-time weather information across the county. They ingest the data into their existing GIS systems using the Tempest API. Charleston County was an early adopter of Tempest’s nearcast winds, which uses the hyper-local winds collected in the backyards of community members to produce the winds and roof and tree top most relevant to their emergency management activities. This is an example of the County’s innovative programs and services which draws national recognition, winning dozens of local, state and national awards.

The Tempest Difference

The team at WeatherFlow-Tempest has been in the business of making weather stations, processing weather data, and serving it to customers in real-time for over 30 years.

We bring all of this experience to market with the Tempest Weather System, a state-of-the-art weather station with an unparalleled level of data curation not seen elsewhere in the industry.

The resulting weather insights and decision making tools are relied on by our customer base of over 150,000, keeping them informed and safe.

Sensor Accuracy

The 11 sensors in the Tempest station are selected based on reliability, measurement precision and cost. Continuous calibrations are performed in our AWS cloud to maintain sensor accuracy.

Build Quality

We aim for the highest build quality to maximize reliability. Parylene and antimicrobial coatings are used to protect the electronics from the elements. Products undergo prolonged stress testing— e.g. in salt water baths, misting chambers and vibration beds. Final quality assurance includes bench testing every device before it is shipped. Stations are then continuously monitored to maximize future production reliability.

The Tempest Network

The sheer size of our network (over 80,000 stations and growing) affords us the opportunity to know what is happening everywhere all the time with a degree of confidence that comes with having multiple stations in close proximity to each other in most locations.

Data Products

Stations deliver real-time conditions for a comprehensive set of parameters — wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, light, UV, rain and lightning— and a suite of derived parameters used in day-to-day decision making. Data is fully curated as it passes through quality control and quality metrics as we leverage the density of the Tempest Network to understand the value of each observation.

Reliability in Real-Time

Leveraging advanced AWS cloud technologies, over 1 billion observations per day are processed and 5 billion quality tests are made per day, with processing latencies of 10’s of milliseconds.

Weather Intelligence

Weather insights provided through mobile, web and API applications, along with notifications and alerts, keep customers informed so they can make timely decisions.

Support and Service

Our post sales support is second-to-none, and is standing by to resolve any issue, with the product backed by a 2-year manufacturer warranty (extendable to 4-years) so you can be sure that your stations will function as advertised.
